Bringing the curriculum to life

At Matchborough First School Academy we love to bring our curriculum to life. We do this through holding events days that encourage creativity, learning and fun. These days inspire children, build character, teach them about the wider world and also involve parents and the community in our love of learning.

We plan and build these days around the idea of transferable and memorable knowledge, to ensure our teaching of the curriculum inspires children with the ultimate goal that ‘children know more and are able do more’.

Have a look at the event days that have taken place in our school.

Year 4 Trip to TRT Lighting (25.09.25)

Intent:

To celebrate National Manufacturing Day, our Year 4 children were invited to TRT Lighting. This was a fantastic opportunity for our children to recognise the application of Science and Technology in a real-world setting. Very few children will have had the chance to see inside a factory. Our Year 4 cohort were lucky enough to visit the factory, learn about the manufacturing process (how raw materials are shipped from all over the world, painted and assembled in the factory and then sold on as a complete lighting product) and see this in action.

Implementation:

The children took part in a ‘Guess the Job’ activity, who works in each role in the factory from Assembly Floor Supervisor to Paint Shop Supervisor to ‘Big Boss’, which challenged gender stereotypes in industry. They had a tour of the factory, which included the paint shop, assembly area and warehouse and everyone had a turn sitting in a forklift truck. The children also took part in a science experiment. They used electric wires and diodes (??) to connect two lemons and a timer button. The lemons acted like a battery, creating an electric circuit that made the timer work.

Impact:

"I enjoyed making an electrical circuit using lemons. I didn't know they could also be batteries." Abraham 4R

"I loved sitting on the fork lift truck. It made me feel really grown up!" 4R Skye

"I love seeing all the different parts to make a street light and how they are stored in something that looked like a giant vending machine!" Ethan 4R

"I liked seeing the variety of lights that they made." Tommy 4R

“We got to use the drills and we blew air at each other.” Mason 4C

“I liked when we watched the cardboard boxes being crushed in the machine.” Alfie 4C

“I liked seeing their ‘supermarket for parts’ and the robot arm that gets the trays.” Katelyn 4C

“I liked when we had to guess the people’s jobs. We got 2 out of 7 at first.” Charlie 4C

British Science Week 2025

Intent:

To celebrate British Science Week this year, we chose to focus on space, with the week titled ‘Out of this World Science’. The whole school enjoyed a ‘Space Day’ on Thursday 13th March.

Our intent for British Science Week was to help the children realise that science is all around us. It is such an integral part to so many aspects of the world in which we live. At Matchborough First School Academy, we encourage the children to constantly explore and engage with their world. We want children to question what is out there and be inquisitive with their learning. Science week is an ideal opportunity to provide children with the opportunity to extend their learning and to really get immersed in science across a week.

Space is not currently included in the National Curriculum for primary school aged children, but children find it fascinating to learn about, so we wanted to provide them with this opportunity to explore topics beyond their curriculum.

During our 'Space Day', the children learnt about: NASA, rockets, gravity, planets, The International Space Station and the history of space exploration, with each year group taking on a different focus area. Children in Year 1-4 also had the opportunity to explore the planets using VR headsets.

World Book Day 2025

We had a great day dressing up as our favourite story book characters and participating in activities all to do with our chosen book The Story Machine by Tom McLaughlin with themes of storytelling and machines. We also welcomed a special visitor to school, poet Spoz, who did some hilarious poetry slam workshops with us where we go to create our own poems and songs about chocolate. Throughout the week, we have also been promoting reading for pleasure by having Book Snuggles and coming to school in our pyjamas to read with our parents who we invited in.

Implementation:

Impact:

Kai Year 4: "I enjoyed sharing my own story with the class. I loved reading to my baby brother too during the Book Snuggle.

Frankie Year 3: "I loved dressing up as my favourite character and how funny the poet was!"

Chloe Year 2: "We got to make our own story machines which brough the story to life."

Jacob Year 1: "I loved it when Spoz read out his poem about water to the whole school and squirted us with water at the same time. It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen!

Children's World Mental Health Week

Intent: The purpose of acknowledging Children's Mental HealthWeek is to give the children an awareness of how important mental health is and how to deal with emotions that they may feel. Being mindful about mental health helps children recognise the part each person has to play in creating a society that understands the importance of good mental health. Our awareness week seeks to inspire action and promote the message of good mental health for everyone.
